Happenings at the Hutch

paper plane 17 august 1
17 August 2022
This morning I landed back in Christchurch after ten days in the US meeting with my Prison Fellowship colleagues.  Whenever the plane comes in to land in whatever city I am visiting, I often look out at the sprawling suburbs or slums, or teeming city streets and the mass of humanity and feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the mission to make disciples of all nations.  My heart sinks sometimes, and I almost feel hopeless. But always I hear the same voice of the Father saying to me, “I already have people down there participating with me.  The magnitude isn’t your responsibility. You focus on what I have called you to!” It reminds me of the passage in John 21:15 – 22 when Peter is walking with the risen Jesus, he looks back at ‘the disciple Jesus loved’ who was following and asks Jesus, “what about him?” – Jesus responded by telling him that’s not his business! You do what I have asked you to do!

As we continue our Renew Together month, we explore what our brothers and sisters in Christ are doing with him in various places around the world and explore what it means to partner with others to make disciples.   This week we look forward to praying specifically for those in our church family who have been ‘sent’ and with whom we partner, as they in turn partner with the local church to bring gospel renewal.   Let’s acknowledge the magnitude of the task, but then focus in on where Jesus wants us to participate with him!
