I believe every church has potential to grow and I believe God wants us to grow. Grow in Maturity and grow new Babies. The tricky part of the growing is the work of the Holy Spirit; as we see in the parable of the “growing seed”
Mk 4 26 And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, 27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.
We notice the man doesn’t know how the seed grows. The seed grows even when the man is sleeping, leaving him credit less. The culprit for growth is the Holy Spirit. We (I) often try to do the work of the Holy Spirit which I’m not qualified for. Rather, I’m called to work alongside of the Holy Spirit. The gifts for the church are first accredited to the Holy Spirit. All that we have of any spiritual value is God breathed and comes from the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 14 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit)
We too often give the Holy Spirit a job description; so as to limit the Holy Spirit, and broaden our own “job description,” reducing the rate of growth. In other words, we would achieve much more in God by taking our queues from the Holy Spirit. In addition, my experience is when the Holy Spirit is sensed and felt; Jesus Christ is always honoured and glorified.
So we ought to evaluate churches by the work of the Spirit, rather than looking for formulas which we ourselves like to develop and take credit for. Again; the man does not know how the seed grows, although the parable is clearly pointing us to God as the grower. Paul affirms this principle in (1 Cor 3;6) “ I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” I still hear people talk about new models of church because most are not working. We attend seminars and read books so we can see things around us grow.
Perhaps our role is too simple or mundane? Notice the man scatters seed………..
