This past weekend we Rices attended the annual Baptist Hui along with about 400 other people, hosted this year by Palmerston North Central Baptist Church. We love these gatherings because they give us a sense of the wider Baptist whānau to which we belong. The Hui began with a powhiri and continued through the weekend with worship, messages from guest speakers, the Baptist Union AGM, official updates from people, ministries, and churches within our movement, big group discussions, and plenty of coffee catch ups with people from around the country. This year we farewelled Craig Vernall from the National Leader role, in which he served for the past 7 years. A Call Committee has been set up to make a recommendation for Craig’s replacement. We also began discussing the recent Listening Hui Report, which we’ve been talking about at Papanui lately. A proposal has been put forward for how we might constructively engage with the issues raised by that Report in our churches, regions, and national Union, which we’re hoping will help us take steps in a faithful direction together. We’ll keep you posted about that. Thanks for your prayers for us and our Baptist colleagues at the Hui. Overall, it was a positive experience for both of us, and we’ve come home with hope for the future.
